MOSCOW, Idaho — Fears of unredacted crime scene photos from the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, has prompted law enforcement agencies in Latah County to issue an urgent warning against sharing the images.
The Latah County Prosecutor’s Office, Moscow Police Department and Idaho State Police said they became aware of a potential release of sensitive crime scene images that include photographs of the victims. The agencies did not identify the source of the leak.
“Providing sensitive unredacted crime scene material for public dissemination is an unwarranted invasion of the victims’ privacy and demonstrates a profound lack of integrity and professionalism,” the agencies said in a joint statement.
The homicides occurred on November 13, 2022, at 1122 King Road in Moscow. Bryan Kohberger is serving life in prison for the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle. He pleaded guilty to the murders last summer and with that plea, waived his right to appeal.
Authorities emphasized that anyone with access to such sensitive material has a professional and ethical responsibility to protect it.
“No family should have to endure the added trauma of knowing images from a loved one’s final moments may be circulating publicly,” the agencies said. “These unredacted images should not be published, posted, shared, or otherwise distributed.”
Idaho passed a law this year that prevents crime scene photos showing people who were killed from being publicly released.
