KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — Craig Meidl, the former chief of the Spokane Police Department, will serve as Undersheriff of the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Robert Norris said.
Meidl spent about 30 years with the Spokane Police Department, advancing through virtually every rank before being appointed Chief of Police in 2016 by then-Mayor David Condon. He inherited a department that was unstable and under public scrutiny at the time. Meidl served in that role until January 2024.
Sheriff Norris emphasized that Meidl’s background managing large law enforcement organizations and collaborating with multiple public safety partners made him the right choice for the undersheriff position.
“The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office is a complex organization serving a rapidly growing community,” Sheriff Norris said. “The Undersheriff must be able to lead people, manage resources, work effectively with our law enforcement partners and, most importantly, understand that our responsibility is to the citizens we serve.”
