SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office has identified Deputy Brian Lawler as the deputy involved in a shooting outside Evergreen Middle School on Sept. 8.
Lawler shot 20-year-old Joel Malin outside the school after authorities received a 911 call reporting a suspicious person walking toward the school. The caller described the person as sweating and said he appeared to have a Glock in his pocket.
A search warrant filed in the case shows Malin was the person who called 911.
Surveillance video released Friday shows Malin running toward Lawler’s patrol vehicle and raising what investigators later determined was a replica firearm.
Lawler has served with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office since October 2003 and has worked as a school resource deputy for several years.
