DEER PARK — Mayor Tim Verzal, who led Deer Park since 2018, died this morning from pancreatic cancer. He was 73.
Verzal announced his retirement Thursday to focus on his health, but his battle with cancer proved too difficult to overcome. Flags throughout Deer Park were lowered to half-staff to honor the public servant.
City Councilman Billy Costello remembered Verzal’s unwavering commitment. “He’s given his heart and soul to this town. Serving with him has been an absolute honor,” Costello said.
Even while undergoing chemotherapy, Verzal continued his duties. “He wanted to fight, like he was fighting to get through the chemo and come back as mayor. He’d be sick and he’d ask me if I could cover the council meetings in a couple of days,” Costello said.
Verzal’s greatest joy came from connecting with elementary school students. Teaching third-graders about government was his favorite part of being mayor. “It was absolutely his favorite thing to do as mayor. I mean, it was his highlight of his year,” Costello said.
The city will accept applications for an interim mayor who will be hired within 90 days and serve through 2027. Next year’s ballot will include a special election for a two-year term extending through 2029. The Deer Park City Council meets Wednesday to discuss next steps.
A memorial service is being planned to allow community members to pay their respects.
