SPOKANE — Several local organizations are hosting a large wildfire relief event today at the Northeast Community Center aiming to provide immediate assistance and long-term support to people affected by recent fires in the region.
The event begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m. at 4001 North Cook Street, between the Northeast Community Center and Shaw Middle School. It is open to anyone impacted by the fires — whether they lost their home, were displaced or opened their home to someone who was displaced.
Attendees will find air purifiers, food, hygiene items, sleeping bags and nearly every immediate resource families recovering may need. Donations will be laid out on large tables for people to browse. Coordinated Care will also be on site offering free dental and vision screenings.
The Northeast Community Center says the relief drive started small but quickly grew into something much bigger. Two rooms at the center are packed with donations. Some donations came from people nearby; others from as far away as Western Washington.
The center is taking a broad approach to relief because organizers have recognized that the fires have affected people in multiple ways. For example, the center says some families hosting displaced relatives or friends are now struggling to afford groceries and need additional assistance.
“We don’t want you to lose that employment, because it is hard to get employment back, and that is the money that is going to keep your family stable,” said Jene Ray, Executive Director of the Northeast Community Center. “That is why we want to do this right now. We want to connect with you right now, before there are other consequences to these fires for your family.”
Organizers have noticed that some people have been holding back on taking advantage of resources, assuming someone else needs it more. But with semi-trucks full of resources to give away, they are asking anyone in need to show up.
Even if someone does not need a specific item, the center hopes they will still stop by.
“If there is something we don’t have, or if there is a resource that you need. If we have your contact information, we will reach out and follow up, and make sure you are taken care of,” Ray said.
The event does not require an appointment, and you don’t need an ID or proof of residency to access resources. All you need to do is show up.
