HAYDEN, Idaho — Voters in the Northern Lakes Fire Protection District will have the chance to vote on a new temporary property tax levy this November.
The Board of Commissioners approved the plan to place this levy before voters in the upcoming election. This levy would provide $4.5 million per year for two years to the district.
This district says the money from this levy would be used to maintain current staffing levels, allow all three operating stations to remain staffed 24 hours a day, retain positions added through the SAFER grant as well as the nine additional firefighters hired in preparation for Station 4’s opening in late spring of next year, and improve response in Garwood and Twin Lakes.
If this levy is not approved, the district says it would have to get rid of up to 21 firefighter positions, there would only be two running stations and Station 4 in Garwood would not be staffed as planned when it opens next year.
The district says it is expected to respond to 7,000 emergency incidents this year, which is about a 40% increase in demand compared to 2019.
This new levy would charge property owners a $5.99 per $100,00 of taxable assessed value more than they are currently paying. This would bring the total after the levy change to $99.26 per $100,000 of taxable assessed value.
