SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane firefighter suffered a minor injury in a house fire early Thursday morning.
According to Spokane Fire Department, firefighters were called to a fire on East 1st Avenue near Napa Street around 5:15 a.m.
Crews located an active fire in the attic of a home and quickly knocked it down. All people inside the home had safely gotten out before SFD arrived.
During the incident, one firefighter suffered a severe hand laceration and required medical treatment.
The cause of the fire was determined to be from an electrical malfunction in a junction box supplying power to a portable heater.
SFD wants to remind the public that house fires increase during colder weather, and they’re frequently caused by heaters plugged into extension cords or power strips. SFD adds many of the city’s older homes have wiring that doesn’t meet modern safety standards.
It’s recommended homeowners consult with a licensed electrician to ensure outlets and wiring are suitable for space heaters.
