SPOKANE, Wash. — The Salvation Army of Spokane will partner with Walmart for an emergency food drive Saturday as local food pantries struggle to meet growing demand from families facing financial hardship.
The drive will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Walmart location at 2301 W. Wellesley Ave.
Community members can donate nonperishable food items to help restock The Salvation Army’s Hope Market food pantries.
The drive aims to restock food pantries experiencing unprecedented demand as more families struggle financially.
“Each week, we see more neighbors turning to The Salvation Army for help putting food on the table,” said Captain David Cain, corps officer of The Salvation Army of Spokane.
The organization canceled plans to temporarily close its Hope Market food pantry in November for construction due to increased need.
Beginning Nov. 5, the pantry will extend Wednesday hours from 12 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. to better serve working families.
Most needed donations include canned meats, fruits, vegetables, pasta and peanut butter.
Other suggested food items are dry beans, rice, oatmeal, crackers, and boxed dinners.
Those unable to attend can donate online at MakingSpokaneBetter.org
