POST FALLS, Idaho — A North Idaho food bank served a record number of families Monday as concerns mount over potential SNAP benefit disruptions caused by the ongoing government shutdown.
The government shutdown has created uncertainty around SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), which provides food assistance to millions of Americans. Many recipients fear their benefits could be interrupted or reduced, leading to increased reliance on food banks and other emergency food services.
3rd Avenue Marketplace in Post Falls served nearly 160 families Monday, a significant jump from the approximately 120 families it typically assists daily.
The organization said it expects demand to continue growing throughout the week as people prepare for the possibility that their food stamp benefits could expire.
“We do have a lot of very, very concerned shoppers that already shop with us and we’re seeing a large increase in new shoppers,” said Michelle Rogers, client case manager at 3rd Avenue Marketplace. “People are really worried about how they’re going to feed their families.”
The food bank is experiencing demand that outpaces its current supply, prompting staff to encourage community donations and volunteer support. Rogers said shelf-stable proteins such as canned tuna and peanut butter are among the most needed items.
Monetary donations are also helpful, as food banks have enhanced purchasing power when buying food in bulk compared to individual consumers.
Kim Ammons, who both volunteers at and uses the food bank, recommends that SNAP recipients visit the food bank before grocery shopping.
“You can fill the voids if you come here and get the items you need, and then go to the store, so you don’t double up,” Ammons said. “You can conserve money that way.”
The Post Falls location partners with 20 other food banks to supply food throughout North Idaho. The organization said it will coordinate with partner organizations this week to prepare for increased demand as the shutdown continues.
