SPOKANE, WASH. — The City of Spokane has implemented Level 2 drought restrictions that will limit how often residents can water their lawns as water supplies tighten.
The restrictions take effect after the Spokane River dropped below 1,000 cubic feet per second at the U.S. Geological Survey monitoring location at Lower Crossing.
Under the Level 2 guidelines, outdoor watering is prohibited between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Residents can water no more than two days per week and must limit watering to no more than two hours per day. Residents also cannot use water to clean driveways, decks and sidewalks.
Some residents support the restrictions. Gayle Swagerty said, “I’m all for the water restrictions.”
However, the exemptions granted to golf courses and schools have drawn criticism on social media.
We have received hundreds of comments from residents questioning why these facilities can run sprinklers throughout the day while homeowners face strict guidelines.
According to Spokane Municipal Code, parks with non-automated irrigation systems are exempt from these restrictions.
