SEATTLE — The Seahawks had enough offense to build a three-score lead Sunday, then enough defense to hold it when the game tightened.
Emanuel Wilson caught a touchdown pass and ran for another score as Seattle beat the Los Angeles Chargers 30-23 at Lumen Field, improving to 3-1 after last week’s narrow loss to Washington.
Seattle led 27-6 in the third quarter before the Chargers clawed their way back into the game. Los Angeles trimmed the margin to seven with 2:14 remaining, then got one final possession after forcing a stop.
The Seahawks’ defense closed the door. Uchenna Nwosu sacked Justin Herbert and forced a fumble in the final minutes, with Seattle recovering to finish off the win.
Wilson stepped into a larger role after rookie running back Jadarian Price was placed on injured reserve Saturday. He carried 21 times for 81 yards and an 8-yard touchdown, while adding three catches for 39 yards. His 23-yard touchdown reception from Sam Darnold gave Seattle an early 7-3 lead after a Chargers muffed punt.
Darnold threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns, including a 6-yard strike to Tory Horton that extended the Seahawks’ lead to 27-6 early in the second half. Rashid Shaheed added a 28-yard touchdown run.
The win was not without problems. Seattle was penalized 14 times for a franchise-record 150 yards, while Darnold threw an interception and was sacked three times. The Chargers also committed 16 penalties for 130 yards in a game that was disjointed from the start.
Herbert threw for 189 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Despite trailing by three scores, Los Angeles made things interesting behind a touchdown pass to Kimani Vidal, a rushing touchdown from Omarion Hampton and a late Cameron Dicker field goal.
But Seattle made the final defensive play, avoiding a collapse and setting up a key NFC West matchup next Sunday as the Seahawks host a hot San Francisco team next week.
