SPOKANE, Wash. — It’s national Fire Prevention Week this week, and this year’s focus is teaching people about safe charging.
Fire Prevention Week takes place every year during the week of October 9 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire that happened in 1871.
This year, fire stations across the country are focusing on teaching people about everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep your family safer.
The National Fire Prevention Association has the following tips you can follow every day to help prevent fires:
Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.Charge your electronics on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or bare floor.Unplug your device when it is fully charged.Charge large items outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging.Stop using your device if it feels very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds. When on a plane, keep your devices where you can see them while charging. Do not charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. Tell a flight attendant if you notice a problem with your device.
