SPOKANE, Wash. — As thousands of individuals and families face displacement from recent fires, community members across the region are stepping in with housing solutions and support.
Avalon 24, a smaller-scale real estate development based in Liberty Lake, is providing six fully furnished apartments to fire victims. The company charges $200 at the end of each resident’s stay, a fee that covers any maintenance performed during their tenancy.
Angela Bare, an employee at Red Rock Management, the company operating the units, said the decision to help came naturally.
“It makes me emotional. I guess that would be the only word I could put to it. I can only imagine as a parent myself what it would feel like to be displaced,” Bare said.
The company is currently working with four families impacted by the fires, with one family planning to move in by the end of this week. Bare emphasized that displaced families need immediate stability rather than long-term commitments.
“Families are not in a position to make an immediate decision or a long term decision right now. They just need to provide for their family and get back to some sort of stability,” Bare said.
Beyond Avalon 24’s efforts, Susan Schuler, a local landowner, is offering her more than 50 acres of property to fire victims who need space for RVs and mobile homes. Schuler is in the process of coordinating water and power access for those staying on her land.
“The message is that we love you and we’re sorry this has happened to you and your family and we’re just hoping to provide some support in a way that might give them some emotional reprieve from what they’re going through and also just to have you know a roof over their head,” Schuler said.
The response to Schuler’s offer has been overwhelming. Many people have already reached out offering resources like RVs and generators for the site or asking when they can bring their families and pets to stay.
Schuler said the property offers more than just shelter. “I always look to the person on my left and right and see if there’s a need, and always try to help,” she said. The land is ideal for peaceful walks with family and pets away from the smoke affecting the town.
Additional housing assistance is available through partnerships with major platforms. Airbnb is working with Washington 211 to provide free stays for displaced residents who qualify. Those seeking this assistance can call 211 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to check eligibility.
