KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — A Kootenai County Sheriff’s K9 was shot and injured during a confrontation with an armed suspect on August 4, 2026, in an incident that ended with the suspect’s death, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the area of Wolf Creek Lodge Road and East Alder Creek Road at approximately 8:20 p.m. following reports of a suspicious male who was armed and had contacted children in the area, the sheriff’s office said. When deputies located the man, he pointed a firearm at one of the officers.
The suspect fled and was tracked by K9 Appa. As the dog pursued him, the man fired several rounds, striking the K9, according to the sheriff’s office. Minutes later, a deputy-involved shooting occurred, and the suspect was pronounced deceased.
The Idaho State Police is conducting an independent investigation.
The suspect was identified as 45-year-old Derek Robert Martin of Bonner County, the sheriff’s office said.
Sheriff Robert “Bob” Norris commended the K9’s performance.
“K9 Appa performed with exceptional courage and professionalism. His actions undoubtedly helped protect our deputies and officers from serious injury or death,” Norris said. “If an armed suspect presents an imminent threat, our deputies will not hesitate to take any necessary action to end that threat. Our mission is to protect our community and ensure that our deputies and officers return home safely to their families at the end of every shift.”
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office shared an update on K9 Appa’s condition: “Our hearts are heavy as we share that K9 Appa is currently fighting for his life. Please keep K9 Appa, his handler, and everyone involved in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. Thank you for your continued support of our deputies, K9 Unit, and the entire Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.”
