SPOKANE, Wash – Local school districts are making plans to support families impacted by the Spokane-area wildfires, while also canceling and pivoting as the fires are still active in their communities.
The Mead School District has families impacted by at least two of the fires burning in Spokane County right now.
Brentwood Elementary, Evergreen Elementary, Highland Middle School, Prairie View Elementary and Skyline Elementary are all under level 3 evacuation orders and are not accessible.
Monday, district leaders gathered to assess conditions and look for ways to support students, staff and families.
“We know many members of our community are displaced, waiting for news, or supporting loved ones who have been impacted,” the Mead School District said in a statement Monday. “Our thoughts remain with every affected student, family, staff member, neighbor, and emergency responders.”
Because of evacuation orders and air quality, all district sponsored activities are canceled for the rest of the week.
The district wants people to hold any physical donations until coordinated collection and distribution systems are established.
The first day of school for Mead Schools is August 26th.
