SPOKANE, Wash. — As the community comes together to support each other through the devastating Spokane Area Fires, it is also an opportunity for scammers to prey on people’s kindness and emotions.
According to Spokane Regional Emergency Communications, there are ways you can protect yourself from disaster scammers:
Be wary of links on social media claiming to have exclusive information, livestreams or videosDonate only through trusted, verified organizationsVerify all information before sharing it with anyone elseBe wary of requests for money, gift cards or personal informationNever click unfamiliar links or provide financial information unless you’re absolutely sure it is a legitimate source
SREC says if you believe you have been the victim of a scam, report it to Crime Check at 509-456-2233.
