SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A fire at Eagle Rock Apartments destroyed 16 of the 24 units in the building, leaving at least 60 residents without homes and forcing them to begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives.
The fire consumed the complex with such intensity that residents lost nearly everything—clothing, furniture, irreplaceable memories, and in some cases, pets. The Red Cross arrived quickly to help families secure immediate shelter and meet their most pressing needs.
“So we ended up working with nine different families to get them some immediate assistance last night. So they had somewhere to go and some immediate needs met. We are again out there today, to provide additional assistance to those that had somewhere to go last night, but have a road of recovery ahead of them,” said Lacie Clark, with The American Red Cross.
The Red Cross expects that in the coming days, more residents will reach out for continued support. That assistance can include financial aid, help from nurses to replace lost medications or medical devices, and access to mental health and spiritual counseling.
The organization’s casework team will follow up with affected families over the coming days and weeks to identify recovery obstacles and connect them with community resources.
“And then we have our casework team that follows up with them. After that, to provide them some resources in the community, identify their recovery roadblocks, and how we can help them through that. And so our casework teams will follow up with them for days or weeks, depending on what that recovery looks like for each individual family,” Clark said.
The community has already mobilized to help. Several GoFundMe accounts have been established for families impacted by the fire, and they have received significant support. Many residents have posted on Facebook offering items and assistance to those affected.
