STEVENS COUNTY, Wash. — Two people died in a head-on collision on State Route 395 early Tuesday morning, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The crash occurred at 5:17 a.m. about 5 miles northwest of Chewelah at milepost 213 in Stevens County.
A northbound vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a southbound garbage truck head-on, the State Patrol said.
The northbound vehicle rolled and came to rest in the southbound ditch, while the garbage truck rolled into the northbound lane and stopped on the northbound shoulder.
The two fatalities were occupants of the northbound vehicle. One victim was identified as Jamey C. Dotts, 55, of Kettle Falls. The second victim, a 47-year-old woman from Springdale, had not been publicly identified pending family notification.
The driver of the garbage truck was not injured and was wearing a seatbelt.
The State Patrol listed crossing the centerline as the cause of the collision. The agency said it was unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
