SPOKANE, Wash. — As families prepare for Thanksgiving gatherings, travelers across the Inland Northwest are facing what could be one of the busiest holiday travel periods on record.
AAA is forecasting a staggering 82 million travelers will hit the skies and roads for Thanksgiving, with this year set to see more drivers reaching their destinations than ever before.
Roads in the Spokane area are already showing increased traffic as people begin their holiday journeys or make final shopping trips for Thanksgiving essentials.
Planning ahead is key to smooth travel
Travel experts emphasize that successful holiday travel requires more than just knowing when to leave. Checking road conditions, flight statuses and gas prices before departing can save both time and money.
Washington drivers should check WSDOT’s interactive map for real-time updates, while Idaho travelers can download the Idaho 511 app for the latest road conditions. Both tools also provide mountain pass conditions, which will be particularly important as colder weather moves into the region after Thursday.
For air travelers, keeping notifications enabled and regularly checking the Spokane Airport for delays is essential. While arrivals have been smooth so far, departures following Thanksgiving are expected to be more challenging.
“I’m flying out Monday, so just a rough, you know,” said Mabry Keil, who flew into Spokane on Wednesday.
When asked about staying calm during airport delays, brother Kevin Keil offered practical advice: “Music. Just look at the watch. Get here early. Ignore people.”
However, travelers should listen to TSA personnel and remain patient.
Fuel costs are adding financial pressure to holiday travel plans. Timothy Bunting, spent $60 at a local gas station, expressed frustration with current prices.
“I’m disgusted. I think the prices should go down,” Bunting said. When asked what he would have done with that money instead, he replied, “Spend it on the grandkids. That’s what it’s all about.”
Bunting has developed strategies to minimize fuel costs: “You have to make all your appointments on one day. Go home, then stay home, and then go again.”
Travelers looking to save money on gas can use apps like GasBuddy to find the best prices in their area. The app reveals that crossing into Idaho can save drivers approximately 70 cents per gallon compared to Washington prices.
Grocery store fuel rewards programs can also provide additional savings.
Travelers are encouraged to build extra time into their schedules, have backup plans ready, and take advantage of available technology tools to stay informed about changing conditions throughout their journey.
