CHENEY, Wash. — Emergency personnel from multiple agencies responded to two critical incidents within roughly an hour of each other today in Cheney.
The first call came in for a shooting at an apartment. Officers located an individual who had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Cheney Police secured the scene, and detectives began investigating. There is no known threat to the public.
While emergency personnel worked at that scene, dispatchers received a separate report of a child who was not breathing near Irene Place. A Cheney Police officer arrived first and began providing lifesaving aid. Cheney Fire personnel and American Medical Response continued emergency care, and the child was transported to a local hospital.
The Cheney Police Department and Cheney Fire Department thanked their partners at Spokane County Fire District 3, EWU Police Department, and American Medical Response for their immediate assistance, along with Spokane Regional Emergency Communications dispatchers for coordinating the response.
“We recognize that events like these are incredibly difficult for everyone involved, including the first responders who answered these calls,” the Cheney Police Department said in a statement.
The circumstances surrounding both incidents remain under investigation.
