SPOKANE, Wash. – For huge fans of meat pies, bagpipes and celebrating Scottish heritage, the annual Spokane Scottish Highland Games took over the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center, including some pretty awesome athletic events.
From weight throws for height and distance to hammer throw and putting the stone, these impressive athletes spent the morning heaving within a great shared community and environment.
We spoke with a Moscow-born professional thrower who spoke to us both about the throwing community here.
“It’s always motivating,” professional highland games thrower AJ Fehey said. “There aren’t many people in it with big egos, everyone’s sorta just cheering each other on. Everyone wants you to throw your best, even your competitors.”
Fahey also touched on playing a part in the cultural experience and sharing this with folks from around the Inland Northwest and the United States.
“It’s really awesome to see all the different cultural things, and then also… seeing a bunch of people who also throw from America trying out over in Scotland and seeing how the two cultures meet, it’s really awesome.”
The games run today through 5:00 p.m.
