SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — The city of Spokane Valley says crews are hard at work in completing a major project that will bring a solution for train and traffic delays.
For months, a railroad underpass on Trent Avenue and Pines Road and a roundabout connecting Trent, Pines and Empire Way have been underway.
“There won’t be waiting for the train crossing, and then there’s less delays with the new roundabout improvements versus the signal. So, traffic will be able to get to I-90 faster from our location,” said project engineering manager Erica Amsden.
The underpass will allow cars to continue driving while the train passes. Once it is installed, the city says it will cut about 4 hours of wait time every day.
The $48 million project was started earlier this year and will be paid for by state and federal dollars. So far, the majority of the two train bridges have been completed.
“During construction, times get tough. But once the construction’s finished and everything’s opened up, I think it’ll make a great improvement for circling around the train, and avoiding all the traffic it causes,” said Austin Hernandez, who uses Trent Avenue to commute to work every day.
On Monday, crews were working on the final paving on Trent Avenue. Then, crews will realign Pines Road to the east. The city hopes to get the realignment finished before winter.
The city says it expects the project to be completed by next spring.
