SPOKANE, Wash – In the face of budget cuts county-wide, Spokane County Detention Services is proposing closing the Geiger Corrections Center in 2027.
Built as an Army barracks in 1992, Geiger has for decades housed Spokane County minimum-security inmates.
The county now says the facility is outdated and would cost more than $50 million to make necessary repairs.
At a budget work session Monday, the director of Detention Services presented a plan that would transition Geiger inmates to the Spokane County Jail in June 2027.
The county would demolish the facility by the end of 2028.
The presentation says the jail has experienced “a substantial drop in the number of offenders” and that “through population management, will have the capacity to absorb the Geiger population.”
That means the county would end some relationships through which the county houses inmates for other agencies.
The analysis shows the county would save $2.79 million in 2028 if Geiger is closed, including the elimination of 24 full-time employees.
The same analysis showed abatement and demolition would cost an estimated $4.75 million.
This isn’t the first time this idea has come up. Past news reports dating back as far as 2012 show discussions about closing the facility.
Spokane County Commissioners would have to approve the closure.
