SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane residents will dial 3-1-1 beginning in late October to report non-emergency crimes as the city takes control of emergency communications services previously handled by Spokane Regional Emergency Communications.
The change affects only city residents. Those on the county side of Havana Avenue will continue using the existing crime check number.
“It’s everything from mapping out how calls need to be handled to hiring call-takers and dispatchers. So we’re in those processes right now. But we have a wonderful emergency communications director who has set up this exact same thing in a variety of cities,” said Erin Hut, City of Spokane.
The 3-1-1 line will handle non-emergency crime reports and requests to add information to existing reports. The city plans to conduct outreach in the coming weeks to inform residents of the change.
The separation from SREC, which voted to terminate its contract with the city last year, marks the first of several transitions. Over the next two years, Spokane will dispatch its own fire calls and begin answering its own 9-1-1 calls by 2028. City officials are working with the 3-1-1 director, police, and fire leadership to ensure a smooth transition.
