UPDATE SUNDAY AFTERNOON FROM WHITMAN COUNTY SHERIFF —
Fire crews were successful in stopping the fire’s progress overnight.
The evacuation alert for SR 272 to Parvin Rd, near Colfax, has been downgraded to level 2.
First responders are asking people to stay away from the South Palouse River Rd area. Conditions still remain hazardous as crews work to clear spot fires, downed trees and downed power lines.
Avista crews are working to restore power to the area.

A fire in Whitman County east of Colfax near Chicken Ranch Road and South Palouse River Road has burned 500 acres. Officials estimate it started around 4:30 pm on Saturday.
Deputies tell us it appears the forward progress has been stopped. They say it doesn’t appear any homes were lost in the fire near Colfax.
State mobilization resources have been activated, and State Fire Marshal’s Office personnel are being dispatched to the area with resources.
The cause of this fire is still under investigation.
