SPOKANE, Wash. — Community organizations and volunteers are mobilizing across Spokane to support fire victims and evacuees as recovery efforts intensify, with officials working to create a coordinated approach to relief.
The city and county are opening a disaster assistance center Thursday at Shadle Park High School, where multiple organizations will provide resources directly to those affected by the fires. The center will operate from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, then expand to 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
Multiple organizations will be on-site to provide comprehensive support. The Spokane Region Long Term Recovery Group will handle case management for fire victims, while other agencies will assist with demolition and debris removal questions and permitting.
Chandra Fox, Spokane County Emergency Management, outlined the range of services available at the center.
“If you lost your drivers license, we’ll have the department of licensing here. We’ll have DSHS. We have a variety of organizations here for you to provide support to you,” Fox said.
In the meantime, immediate relief is being provided through meal distribution efforts. Spokane’s own Sydney Sweeney has been volunteering with World Central Kitchen and Women and Children’s Free Restaurant to hand out meals to anyone in need. The meal distribution continued through 6 p.m. or until supplies ran out.
Longtime volunteers from Women and Children’s Free Restaurant, which is hosting the event, expressed gratitude for the additional support during this critical time for the community. The organization has been instrumental in providing food assistance to evacuees and displaced residents.
The School District is also opening a resource center to assist those affected by the fires, adding another avenue for residents to access support services.
