SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — A rabid bat has been reported in Spokane County for the first time this year.
According to Spokane Regional Health District, the bat was confirmed positive for rabies on July 24. This is the fifth rabid bat to be reported in Washington this year.
SRHD says no people or pets were exposed to this bat.
Rabies is a virus that affects the central nervous system of warm-blooded mammals. It can be fatal if left untreated.
SRHD says it is required for dogs, cats and ferrets in Washington to be vaccinated against rabies and re-vaccinated following veterinary and vaccine manufacturer instructions.
To help prevent contact with bats, make sure to remember to bring pets into the house at night, keep all doors and windows closed, cover attic vents, repair and seal loose shingles and siding and make sure exterior doors to the basement and attic are closed and in good condition.
Contact SRHD and your healthcare provider when you or your pets have direct contact with a bat, a bat is found in a room with a sleeping person, a bat is found in a room with an unattended child or a bat is found in a room with someone who has a sensory or mental impairment.
