SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Velocity substitutes fueled a strong 3-1 comeback win over Fort Wayne FC, securing Spokane’s fourth-straight win.
“These nine-point weeks, they take absolutely everybody,” head coach Leigh Veidman said. “There’s a lot of squad rotation today. A different team today than Wednesday. And then last Saturday there was a lot of rotation in the team. Everyone stepped up when it was called upon.”
Shavon John-Brown scored his first Velocity brace, bagging goals in the 66th and 81st minutes after subbing on in the 58th minute.
“Whoever is starting is a strong team, and whoever’s on the bench is a strong bench,” John-Brown said. “So we want to keep that momentum going forward. And altogether, we’re just good at each position. So it’s good that you have a strong bench to come in and change your game.”
Captain Luis Gil scored the insurance goal in the 84th minute, putting away a Fort Wayne team that beat Spokane just three weeks ago.
“I mean, the revenge part was the sweetest,” Gil said. “It felt nice.”
The win rocketed Spokane up to fourth in USL League One, sitting alone with 32 points and just three points back from Union Omaha in first place.
The Velocity next travel to Chattanooga Red Wolves FC on Saturday, August 1 at 4:00 p.m. PST.
