SPOKANE, Wash. — Authentic European armor from the Middle Ages is now on display in Spokane, giving residents a rare opportunity to step into the world of medieval knights.
The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture unveiled “Iron and Honor: The Art of Knighthood” last week, and the response has been overwhelming. Thousands of visitors have already experienced the exhibit, which showcases rare armor and weaponry from a prestigious European collection.
The artifacts come from the Stibbert Museum in Florence, Italy, a renowned institution known for its extensive collection of medieval and Renaissance pieces.
“We are always trying to build these relationships both with museums across our area but I mean across the world. Part of our mission is to bring some of the world to Spokane when we can,” said Ellen Postlewait, historian and curator at the MAC.
The collection spans several centuries of European history, with pieces dating from the 15th through the 17th centuries. Visitors can examine full suits of armor, swords, shields, and other artifacts that reveal the craftsmanship and engineering behind medieval weaponry. Each piece tells a story about the knights who wore them and the era in which they lived.
The exhibit connects visitors of all ages to the legend of the medieval knight, offering educational opportunities to learn about weaponry, Renaissance culture, and the historical context surrounding knighthood.
