MEAD, Wash. — A 17-year-old boy is recovering from serious injuries after a three-vehicle crash near the intersection of Russell Lane and Highway 395. The Washington State Patrol said the crash was caused by an impaired driver who was arrested after attempting to flee the scene.
One of the teens injured in this crash, Brody Three Stars, is now in a medically induced coma.
“It really puts things into perspective, especially with our age and when we think we have so much time that it kind of shows you that time is very limited,” said Beau Tampien, a friend of the Mount Spokane High School student injured in the crash.
Students at the school organized a community gathering Monday night to show support. It had high schoolers from across the county in attendance.
“We’re always behind him right here. And we just want his family to know that we’re supporting him,” said Quincy Sherman, a student at Mount Spokane High School who helped organize the event.
Christine Brischle, whose son plays baseball with Three Stars said the incident has been difficult for his teammates.
“It’s been incredibly difficult, especially these boys who have grown up together. To see one of their best friends in a state that they never imagined,” Brischle said.
Brischle started a GoFundMe to help with medical costs. The campaign has already raised more than $53,000 with more than 500 people contributing.
“What this means is that family is not going to have to worry about the expenses that insurance doesn’t cover and whatever else they need,” Brischle said.
The Washington State Patrol said the crash is still under investigation, and that charges are pending against Matthew Hall, the driver suspected of causing the crash.
