PULLMAN, Wash – Washington State University football fans could get an upgraded fan experience if the Board of Regents agrees to lend money to a plan for improvements at Gesa Field.
The WSU Board of Regents next week will vote on whether to lend $5 million to the project that would ultimately be funded by private donations.
Phase one of the $12 million plan costs $8 million and, if funding is secured, would be completed before next football season.
The plan calls for “creating an electric environment with an upgraded video board, sound system, and LED lights” that “will provide one of the best fan experiences in the country.”
The proposal calls the improvements “vital to WSU’s ability to host a meaningful game experience on campus.”
WSU Athletics says the current video board and lights are at the end of their operational life and are no longer supported by the original manufacturers. The proposal says the equipment also doesn’t support current software programs.
Future projects include new turf and “other enhancements to the fan and student athlete gameday experience.”
The item on the Regents’ agenda shows WSU has already secured most of the pledges and cash needed for phase one: $1.3 million in cash and $4.2 million in pledges over the next five years.
WSU Athletics is seeking Board of Regents approval to supplement the cash flow timing of phase one, not to exceed $5 million.
