PEND OREILLE COUNTY, Wash. — A woman was injured Sunday when a black bear attacked her outside her home near Ione, approximately 14 miles south of Metaline Falls in Pend Oreille County.
According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), the incident occurred on Sept. 6 when the adult female was outside her residence when a black bear ran toward her and swiped at her, making contact.
The woman retreated inside her house, and the bear ran off. She received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.
Later that day, WDFW Police officers located and lethally removed a black bear near the scene that matched the victim’s description.
According to WDFW, if a bear walks toward you, identify yourself as a human by standing up, waving your hands above your head, and talking in a low voice. Back away while avoiding direct eye contact. Do not run.
