MOSCOW, Idaho – The attorney representing the family of one of the University of Idaho murder victims says Washington State University should hold some responsibility for the crimes.
Shanon Gray represents the Goncalves family and says the family is filing a lawsuit against WSU.
Kaylee Goncalves was murdered along with Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Ethan Chapin in November 2022.
Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty to killing them. At the time of the murders, he was a grad student studying criminology at nearby Washington State University.
He began classes there just a few months before the murders.
Public records released after Kohberger’s conviction shows several students and professors complained about Kohberger’s behavior. His role as a teaching assistant was terminated around the time of the murders.
“We filed this lawsuit to seek accountability and transparency from Washington State University,” the Goncalves family said in a statement. “Our goal is to understand what went wrong, to ensure that no other family endures the same tragedy, and to honor the memory of those who were lost. We trust the legal process to uncover the truth.”
4 News Now asked Gray for more information about the lawsuit, including if it had been filed yet and in which court.
He said the statement speaks for itself.
As of Wednesday afternoon, court databases show no record of the lawsuit being filed.
