BONNER COUNTY, Idaho – A hunter in Bonner County shot a grizzly last week, thinking he was shooting a black bear.
Idaho Fish and Game says the hunter shot the young female in the Priest Lake drainage area and immediately self-reported to the Citizens Against Poaching hotline.
IDFG says the hunter is fully cooperating with the investigation.
Grizzly bears are protected by state and federal law.
Starting in January, hunters in Idaho are required to pass a bear identification test to learn the difference between black bears and grizzly bears.
“Fish and Game regrets the loss of this grizzly bear and appreciates the hunter’s self-reporting and continued cooperation on the investigation,” the agency said in a news release.
