IDAHO — Idaho voters are just days away from making an important decision about abortion laws.
Right now, abortions are banned in most cases statewide. If Proposition 1 passes, it would reverse that.
A group that opposes the measure has filed a lawsuit, claiming the other side is breaking campaign finance rules to get it passed.
In the lawsuit, two groups argue the Idaho State Democratic Party used donations illegally. The party says it hasn’t done anything wrong and that the lawsuit is taking away from the issue of abortion.
The Idaho Family Policy Center, a conservative Christian group, was the organization to file the lawsuit. The lawsuit claims that a pro-choice organization donated money to the Democratic party, and that the party used those funds to pay a lower rate for TV ads that is usually reserved for candidates.
According to the lawsuit, the group claims the party got that rate by saying the ads were on behalf of governor candidate Terri Pickens.
“Voters in Idaho deserve to know where the money is coming from,” said Caleb Pirc, the legal center director for the Idaho Family Policy Center. “Idaho campaign finance law’s designed in a way to make sure that people know how money’s being spent, where it’s coming from, and we’re filing this lawsuit to ensure that that accountability is there. That way, the people of Idaho can know what’s happening and make their own choice.”
The Democratic party called the lawsuit “frivolous,” saying it is taking away from women who have been negatively impacted by abortion bans.
“We won’t be intimidated into silence,” the party said in a statement. “Idahoans deserve to hear these families’ stories and make up their own minds on November 3.”
The Secretary of State’s office says all the paperwork for the ads was filed correctly. No further investigation has been done because the office has not yet received an official complaint.
