WA INITIATIVE 001 PARENTAL RIGHTS
OLYMPIA, Wash – Washington voters are so far rejecting an initiative that gives parents more access to student records and information.
The initiative supports reinstating measures put in place by the so-called Parents’ Bill of Rights. Some of the measures put in place because of that initiative were undone or weakened with legislation.
It shortens the deadline for schools to give student records to parents from 45 days down to 10. It also gives parents more access to health and counseling records.
Supporters, including House Republicans and Let’s Go Washington, say it restores trust between parents and schools.
Opponents of the initiative include the Washington Education Association and Washington Governor Bob Ferguson. Opponents say it could put kids at risk who could face abuse or unsupportive situations at home.
Opponents also say the 10-day deadline strains school staff.
