BOISE, Idaho – Voters in Idaho want the state constitution amended in order to make English the official language of the state.
IDAHO CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT 6
On Election Night, voters are so far passing Idaho House Joint Resolution 6, an amendment to the state constitution that makes English the official language.
If passed, English would have to be used in all public proceedings, public documents, public instruction and any other public acts in the state.
The Idaho Legislature approved the measure in 2025, but state law requires it to be decided by voters.
If the measure fails, English will be the official language by statute only, but the constitution won’t be changed.
30 states have adopted English as the official language, including 11 that have done so through ballot measures.
