BENEWAH COUNTY – A fatal crash Friday afternoon claimed the life of an 86-year-old Fernwood resident when his vehicle collided head-on with a semi-truck at a busy intersection in Benewah County.
The crash occurred at approximately 4:48 p.m. at the intersection of State Highway 3 and Sportsman Road.
According to officials, a 57-year-old St. Maries resident was stopped on Highway 3, preparing to turn west onto Sportsman Road in a silver 2018 Ram pickup.
The 86-year-old driver of a 2022 Honda Ridgeline, traveling behind the Ram pickup, moved to pass the stopped vehicle. While attempting to pass, the Honda Ridgeline collided head-on with a southbound 2026 Kenworth semi-truck driven by a 48-year-old Deary resident.
The force of the initial collision pushed the Honda Ridgeline into the Ram pickup. The driver of the Honda Ridgeline was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency responders closed the roadway for approximately 3 and a half hours while crews worked at the scene.
This investigation is ongoing.
