COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — As students return to classrooms today, the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department is taking extra steps to keep young pedestrians safe on their way to school.
The fire department will have emergency vehicles at or near seven elementary schools throughout the city beginning 45 minutes before school start times. The initiative aims to increase driver visibility and remind motorists that children are back on neighborhood streets and school zones.
Fire Department emergency vehicles will operate with their emergency lights activated to alert drivers in the area. In addition to raising awareness, fire personnel will help children cross busy street intersections, providing an extra layer of protection during the busy morning commute.
“Motorists are asked to use caution on roadways and in neighborhoods, and to anticipate children walking to and from school each day,” according to a statement from the fire department.

Drivers should anticipate seeing children walking to and from school not just today but throughout the school year. The fire department encourages motorists to reduce speed in school zones and residential neighborhoods and watch for children at intersections and crosswalks.
