SEATTLE — The Seahawks came up just short Sunday at Lumen Field, falling 32-29 to the undefeated San Francisco 49ers in a tight NFC West matchup that ended with a controversial ruling on Seattle’s final possession.
Trailing by three in the closing moments, Seattle turned to Cooper Kupp on fourth down. Kupp was ruled short of the line to gain after the catch-and-run, ending the Seahawks’ final opportunity to tie or take the lead. The spot drew immediate debate as the 49ers secured the win.
Seattle had battled back from a 21-13 halftime deficit and carried a 26-21 lead late in the third quarter. Emanuel Wilson opened the scoring for the Seahawks with a two-yard touchdown run, while Sam Darnold later connected on a 16-yard touchdown pass. Jason Myers kept Seattle in front with five field goals, including kicks from 49, 50, 43, 48 and 40 yards.
But the 49ers answered in the fourth quarter. Brock Purdy capped a 12-play, 74-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Brandin Cooks, then hit Mike Evans for a two-point conversion to put San Francisco ahead 29-26. Myers’ 40-yard field goal tied the game at 29 with 6:55 remaining, but Eddy Pineiro made a 44-yarder with 1:56 left to give San Francisco the deciding points.
Darnold finished 18 of 29 for 195 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Wilson rushed 20 times for 61 yards and a score, while Seattle’s leading receiver totaled 102 yards and a touchdown. The Seahawks defense was led by Byron Murphy II, who recorded two sacks, and Ernest Jones IV, who had nine tackles.
Turnovers proved costly for Seattle. The Seahawks committed four, including a late second-quarter fumble that Gracen Halton recovered in the end zone for a San Francisco touchdown.
The loss drops Seattle to 3-2 overall and 2-1 at home. San Francisco improved to 5-0.
