SPOKANE — With students returning to classrooms in one week, Spokane Public Schools is encouraging families to enroll children early in preschool and kindergarten programs.
Early enrollment can help families secure spots at preferred schools and programs. It also gives parents time to meet teachers, tour classrooms and gather information before the first day.
“It is a critical time. So much is happening in brain development, so they are really sponges and can take in so much in a safe, structured environment that is consistent and provides both academic and emotional support and growth,” said Shawna Armstrong, the district’s elementary curriculum coordinator.
Children ages 3 and 4 may be eligible for preschool programs. Children who turn 5 by Aug. 31 are eligible for kindergarten.
Armstrong said the programs build literacy and language skills while helping children learn to share, follow routines and manage emotions in a structured environment.
This is the second year Spokane Public Schools has offered preschool at every elementary school, expanding access to early learning across the district.
“It is really great if the environment of school isn’t brand new, even though the people and other students are going to be new for them,” said Kate Lyle, a kindergarten teacher at Roosevelt Elementary.
Lyle said students with early education experience often arrive better prepared for classroom routines.
“Being part of a school community, following directions, standing in line — just kind of how you navigate a classroom — you can always tell students who have been there before,” Lyle said.
The district said parents can help prepare children by practicing routines before the first day, including opening lunch containers, putting on coats and backpacks, following two-step directions and asking adults for help.
