SPOKANE, Wash. ā Significant portions of Riverside State Park remain closed as crews work to clear damaged trees and other hazards caused by the Old Trails and Autumn Lane fires.
While many areas have been reopened, sections near the Little Spokane River and Bowl and Pitcher remain blocked off to the public. According to updates posted on the parkās website, the cleanup effort is extensive and will take months to complete. The park does not anticipate reopening any more major areas until spring 2027.
The scope of the fireās impact extends beyond trees. The park has identified erosion concerns, especially around the Little Spokane River. Itās also worried that uneven ground and heavy equipment could pose safety risks to visitors.
Bowl and Pitcher, one of the parkās main destinations, presents a mixed situation for hikers. While the area is open, the trail system west of the suspension bridge is closed.
Andrea Spinelli, a Spokane resident who spent the afternoon at Bowl and Pitcher, said she was surprised to see that she couldnāt go farther than the bridge.
āItās sad, but itās temporary,ā Spinelli said. āAnd Iām so glad to see how many trees theyāre taking out and cleaning up the debris, you know, as far as nature.ā
The park is asking visitors to respect all closure signs and stay out of restricted areas. Going into closed zones can result in a ticket.
Another popular spot facing extended closure due to debris along the river is the St. Georgeās Put-In, which typically draws paddleboarders and kayakers.
The park says it is working as quickly as possible to restore access to more areas.
In the meantime, Spinelli said sheās looking forward to seeing the area come back to life.
āIām willing to wait to see the beauty afterwards,ā Spinelli said.
Visitors planning a trip to Riverside State Park can check the parkās website to confirm which areas are accessible before heading out.
