BOUNDARY COUNTY, Idaho — Firefighters are continuing to make progress on a wildfire burning about 20 miles northwest of Bonners Ferry.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, the lightning-caused Upper Smith Fire is currently estimated to be 748 acres with no containment. It is burning in the Smith Creek Drainage of the Kootenai River Valley.
The fire began on July 8 and is burning on a steep, north-facing slope in heavy timber.
Firefighters will work on building control lines for the fire and use helicopters to drop water on active parts of the fire.
Smith Creek Road and the Long Canyon Trail are closed so fire crews can work in the area. You can see more about Forest Service closures by clicking here.
