SPOKANE, Wash. — A familiar moose is out and about in Spokane again. This year, she’s back with three new baby calves.
Moose 229 was spotted in north Spokane last year with twins, and in 2024 with a single calf. This year, she’s back in the area showing off her triplets.
Wildlife officials say it takes a lot of energy for the mom to raise three calves, and it’s actually pretty rare to see in nature.
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife says for a moose to care for three calves, it has to be getting enough nutrients and be strong enough to support her young ones.
“It’s easy food for her,” said WDFW communications manager Staci Lehman. “She has a baby, an easy way to care for it in an area that she knows is kind of safe.”
Although the mother moose feels safe in Spokane, Lehman says it’s best for moose to be out in nature rather than getting used to people.
“A lot of people are worried about carnivores, bears, cougars, wolves, and a lot of times we say you should be more worried about moose,” Lehman said.
While the sight of the little family may be exciting, if you see them, WDFW says to back up, given them space, and do not approach.
