SPOKANE, Wash – Hundreds of students from several Spokane-area high schools walked out of class Tuesday morning to protest the ICE shooting in Minneapolis.
Organized by Spokane Students for Human Decency, who said students walked out of class at 11 am “in solidarity with the family of Renee Nichole Good, a woman tragically murdered by ICE, as well as the families of detainees affected by ICE detention and human rights abuses in our own community and nationally.”
Two students from Lewis and Clark High School lead the group.
“We are walking out because we refuse to stay silent in the face of injustice. Human lives and dignity matter, and we demand accountability,” said Ava Swigart, Lewis and Clark senior and organizer.
4 News Now cameras saw students walk out of Lewis and Clark and North Central High Schools. A student from Rogers High School called to say students there were participating as well.
Organizers say walkouts were also planned at Ferris, Mt. Spokane, Gonzaga Prep and St. George’s.
Spokane Schools sent a note to families saying the district was aware of the protests.
Students walking out would be marked absent.
“While peaceful demonstrations are permissible, they must be held where they will present no hazards to persons or property, and at designated times that will not disrupt classes or other school activities,” the district said. “Our primary aim is to ensure the school day continues as usual and that all staff and students remain safe.”
