WALLACE, Idaho — Part of the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office opened to the public for the first time since last month’s shooting, but it could be a while before the building is fully repaired and reopened.
A 77-year-old man from Mullan shot two women outside the sheriff’s office and also fired shots inside the lobby. Three people were hit but survived. The man was shot and killed by deputies.
Bullet holes are still visible in the glass around the lobby. Most of the building remains closed as damage from the shooting gets repaired.
The DMV located in the sheriff’s office opened to the public for the first time since the shooting today. Only two people are allowed in at a time, and they have to be buzzed in through a door that wasn’t locked before the shooting.
“People have to wait there, pick up the red phone, say what they want and then they’ll be let in,” Sheriff William Eddy said. “It made me rethink a lot of things so hopefully that’s in the works.”
Sheriff Eddy said they’re working on bringing in extra security measures to keep staff and the public safe.
“There’s quite a bit that still needs to be done,” Eddy said. “While that’s happening, drivers licensing will probably have to close down again for a week or two weeks.”
Deputies and dispatchers have been working out of the building since the day after the shooting. But Eddy said it will be difficult to feel like things are back to normal.
“I think it’ll always feel different,” Eddy said. “That was a big deal. Who comes into a sheriff’s office and shoots it up? Other than someone looking for suicide by cop.”
The sheriff’s office is working to find grants to fund extra security technology to keep the building safe. Eddy expects the courthouse across the street to add security as well.
He said his staff still has some concerns about continuing to work in the building, but they have stepped up and kept working to keep the public safe.
