NESPELEM, Wash – Fire crews working around the clock to battle the largest fire in Washington right now face critical fire weather later this week.
The Kaiser Canyon Fire burning largely on the Colville Reservation has burned nearly 70,000 acres since it started on July 16th.
Flames have destroyed at least 13 structures and cultural sites, including the Shaker Church. Crews say the Powwow Grounds have not been impacted by the fire.
Fire crews have yet to establish any significant fire line.
In a daily briefing sent Tuesday morning, fire crews say visibility has limited the use of aircraft to fight the fire, which is burning timber, brush and grass.
Steep, rugged terrain is also a challenge. Drones will arrive Tuesday to help with infrared heat detection and other support.
Hot, unstable weather will impact fire behavior all week, as crews focus on defending homes along Columbia River Road.
Fire bosses are concerned about thunderstorms in the forecast for Thursday, followed by a dry cold front that could bring the potential for critical fire weather conditions heading into the weekend.
