BOUNDARY COUNTY, Idaho — Smith Creek Road and the Long Canyon Trail in Boundary County are currently closed due to a wildfire in the area.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, the 414-acre Upper Smith Fire is currently burning about 20 miles northwest of Bonners Ferry and about six miles west of Porthill. It began on July 8 and was caused by lightning in the area.
The fire is burning in steep, rugged terrain. Firefighters are working to keep the fire’s footprint small and have made good progress constructing lines around the fire.
As of the last update, the fire is still 0% contained.
Firefighters will continue with suppression efforts and building a line around the fire on Sunday.
The Forest Service says an official road closure has been ordered for Smith Creek Road and the Long Canyon Trail so crews can work safely in the area. People are asked to avoid the Smith Creek drainage area at this time.
There are currently no evacuations in place for this fire.
