Spokane, Wash. — Preparation for Spokane County’s August 4th primary election is underway, with the Elections Office set to mail out ballots starting next week on July 15th and 16th.
The Spokane County Elections Office will begin distributing ballots Wednesday and Thursday, with voters expected to receive their ballots in their mailboxes within about a week and a half. Over 377,000 envelopes will be sent out, but that number is expected to be higher as we near the primary.
Voters should expect a change in appearance when their ballots arrive. The ballot envelopes will feature a navy-blue stripe on the top left corner. Each county has a different color. For Spokane County, it is navy-blue.
“We really urge voters to mark your ballot as soon after you receive it as soon possible and get it back into the mail to us,” Dalton said.
Spokane County will have 27 ballot drop boxes available this election year for voters who prefer not to mail in their ballots. A voter’s pamphlet will arrive within the next week containing a complete list of drop box locations throughout the county.
The August 4th primary includes several significant measures for Spokane County voters to consider. One measure seeks renewal of a portion of the sales and use tax that funds the Spokane Transit Authority, or STA. Currently, for every $10 spent, 8 cents is collected through this tax to maintain bus routes and service. STA is asking voters to renew one-fourth of this tax — or 2 cents — for another 20 years.
Local libraries are also on the ballot, requesting a property tax increase to address maintenance needs for aging buildings. For a homeowner with a $350,000 home who currently pays approximately $115 annually in library property taxes, the proposed levy would add about $42 per year.
Votes will be received until 8 pm on August 4th.
