SEATTLE, Wash. — Belgium advanced to the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals with a 4-1 win over the United States on Monday night at Lumen Field, ending the Americans’ tournament run.
Charles De Ketelaere scored twice to lead Belgium, while Hans Vanaken and Leandro Trossard also found the net. Malik Tillman scored the lone goal for the United States, briefly leveling the match before Belgium pulled away in the second half.
Belgium opened the scoring in the first half before Tillman answered early in the second. The match shifted moments later when Vanaken restored Belgium’s lead, and De Ketelaere added his second goal before Trossard sealed the victory in stoppage time.
The loss ends the United States’ World Cup run in the Round of 16.
Belgium will face Spain in the quarterfinals on Friday, July 10, at Los Angeles Stadium (SoFi Stadium) in Inglewood, California.
Kickoff is scheduled for noon Pacific (3 p.m. Eastern), with a berth in the semifinals on the line.
